We got a call from a woman who had just purchased a 2022 Hyundai Palisade at a local auction in Long Beach on Willow. When she got the car, she began to notice a lingering smell of both cigarette and cigar smoke, much to her dismay. This was a very interesting job for multiple reasons. I was contacted by the owner of an apartment in Santa Monica who had been using it as an Air BnB for quite some time. He wanted to stop doing Air BnB and move in himself but there were cigarette smoke issues throughout the apartment. He had even had the carpets and the upholstery cleaned but there was still the smoking smell odor in the drapes and elsewhere. This was a very nice apartment, 2,800 square feet just 3 blocks from the ocean and with a beautiful view. This home was right across the alley from the beach, basically one eighth of a block from the water. As a result, the are there is very, very humid and, with the addition of showers and cooking in a sealed up apartment, a mold problem is created. The shower in the bathroom was the obvious place to start. I had the property owner treat the shower with a spray bottle containing a diluted bleach solution. I had him spray this in the shower with particular attention to the grout because that is porous and retains moisture. This was an interesting job in a couple of ways. The boat’s owner found us via our brochure at the Shoreline Marina bulletin board in Long Beach. After taking a look at his odor problems we knew we could help him once the sources of the odors were properly dealt with. The first order of business was to get the bilge cleaned out. This is a common source of boat odors and while we don’t clean bilges ourselves, we do have some excellent, reliable providers of this service that we can recommend. During the course of inspecting the boat and determining the bilge smell issues, we discovered that there was a minor rat infestation as well.
